Rest & its Discontents

During Oct 2016, a month-long transdisciplinary exhibition explored the many and changing ideas of rest and its opposites through site-specific installations, artists’ moving image, performance, drawing, poetry, data, sound and music.

Rest & its discontents was an exhibition curated by GV Art that explored rest and noise, tumult and work, through site-specific installations, artists’ moving image, performance, drawing, poetry, data, sound and music. The exhibition featured work carried out by a group of interdisciplinary researchers, artists and people like us, who were all part of Wellcome Trust’s first Hub residency from 2014-2016.

Guerilla Science exhibited the results of our collaboration with artist Aino Tytti and researcher Bradley Garrett. The installation featured a sound piece inspired by our Listening to the City at Rest event at Denning Point, a 20 storey former council block in East London. The piece was initially inspired by thinking of high places as restful spaces within the city, away from the noisy hustle and bustle of London life. In the changing physical landscape of the city of London, access to these spaces is becoming complicated by gentrification, social cleansing and the leaching of true public space that often comes with development nowadays. The sound piece reflected the sonic environment of the building and our journey upwards, with musings on the sonic properties of the vertical city.

The transdisciplinary approach to the ‘Rest & its Discontents’ exhibition invited visitors to take a deep dive into the many and changing ideas of rest and its opposites, making us consider the functional and dysfunctional aspects of our relationship with rest today.
