This Sept 2016, we’re bringing our trademark form of renegade research at the Symbiosis Gathering in Oakland, CA! Inside the Guerilla Science tent, we will be bursting at the seams with neuroscientists, astrophysicists, medical doctors and more, hosting a smorgasbord of events that mix science with art, music and play.

Presenting the Fire Organ – the many-headed hydra of flame tubes! A unique way to see and feel sound – through flames and motion. Come and try it for yourself plus see nightly performances and demonstrations!

MIDNIGHT – Stargazing, Live!

Come and gaze at the heavens through our telescopes, and learn more about the science and symbolism of the stars from professional astronomers in our nightly guided star tours.

Friday

NOON – Science+Yoga

Ease into your day with our unique yoga workshop. As you’re guided through familiar flows and favorite poses, you will learn more about what’s happening in your body and mind, and the science behind this ancient practice. Bring a mat or towel, and prepare to stretch in the name of science.

1PM – Anatomical Life Drawing: Moving & Muscles

A life drawing class with a twist. Blending art and science, this workshop will be jointly led by a professional artist and a medical doctor, who lead a life-drawing class with a dose of anatomy.
Today’s theme is ‘Moving and muscles.’ All materials provided!

2PM – Psychedelic Data Science

Can you imagine what psychedelic experiences look like? Ever wondered if illegal drugs are actually better for you than legal ones? With the recent surge of data into the therapeutic benefits of psychedelics, big-data machine learning technologies are helping us answer those questions. Join Dr. Jessica Nielson for a journey through beautiful visualizations from self-reported psychedelic drug experiences.

3PM – Science of Tie-Dye!

Dr. Christine Metzger leads an interactive workshop about
the science of natural dyes and the shibori tie-dye method. All materials provided, but if you have something in particular you’d like to decorate – bring it along! (Any lightly colored natural fabric will do!)

4PM – Sensory Speed Dating

This isn’t your ordinary speed dating! Explore how your senses drive your desires through 45 minutes of visceral interactions with your fellow Symbiosis community. Discover the diverse ways we communicate non-verbally and, who knows, you might even get lucky…

5PM – Battle of the STDs

A costumed obstacle-course STD-themed battle! Choose your sexually transmitted disease and compete to find out if you’ve got what it takes to get CONTRACTED.

1PM – Drugs, Sex, & Arachnids

Arachnids (scorpions, spiders, and their kin) exhibit complex courtship rituals, and their bizarre reproductive strategies include traumatic insemination and self-amputation of reproductive organs. They produce materials stronger than steel and more tensile than Kevlar, and some species may even hold they key to curing some forms of cancer. Nonetheless, there are still dozens of new species discovered each year and the natural history of these secretive animals is still in many ways unknown to us.

Gather your remaining brain cells and energy for a highly-charged Sunday afternoon debate. Hosted by Dr. Crystal Dilworth and a featuring a panel of (what we think are….) ‘experts’, we will discuss what exactly makes someone an expert.
